THE ART OF POLYNESIA
Hokule’a, the iconic Hawaiian double hull voyaging canoe, has featured regularly in the news during her world sailing voyage, her now four year Malama Honua, which she commenced in 2014.
The intrepid crew of Hokule’a circumnavigated the archipelago of French Polynesia on her route to New-Zealand, tracking westward to Australia, and then to Bali before crossing the expanse of the Indian Ocean to the island of Mauritius. From there she negotiated the Cape of Good Hope before crossing the Atlantic Ocean towards Brazil, after which stops in Cuba and up the Eastern Coast of the United States brought her to Nova Scotia, Canada. At the time of writing, Hokule’a is moored in dry dock on the East Coast in preparation for her homeward voyage. She will return to Hawaii in June 2017 via the Panama Canal, then following trade winds to Rapa Nui, Pitcairn Island, Tahiti and finally sailing north to Hawaii.
The phenomenal seafaring feat undertaken by Hokule’a and her crew, sailing the vast oceans on a simple wood construction vessel lashed together with rope, without instruments, and guided only by the stars, has raised awareness globally to what can be accomplished sustainably and with so little.
At every one of the hundred ports at which Hokule’a has so far moored around the world, thousands of people from every culture came to admire her beauty and marvel at the seaworthiness of the Polynesian canoe construction. Hokule’a and her crew served as ambassadors of the Hawaiian people, educating those who came into contact with them of the cultural significance of canoes as an intrinsic part of life in the Pacific.
