NEW ZEALAND

The canoes of New Zealand have been described in great detail by Elsdon Best great work “The Maori Canoe”. It is certainly the most profound, best-documented, and most complete study on any Oceanic canoe.

I would also like to add the work by Jeff Evans, an acquaintance of mine, “Waka Taua, The Maori war canoe”, published in 2000.

Haunui canoe- New Zealand.

Haunui canoe- New Zealand.

Built in Auckland in 2009 by Salthouse Boat Builders and funded by the Okeanos Foundation of the Sea, the 72-foot vessel was modeled on the Cook Islands voyaging canoe Te Au O Tonga. Originally named Va’atele for American Samoa, it was damaged in a 2009 tsunami before being acquired by Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr and renamed Haunui.

This style vessel belongs to a specific design type modeled after the Te Au O Tonga (Cook Islands) and was constructed in a fleet of seven exemplars , Hikianalia being one of them.
