HAWAIIAN FISHING CANOE # 4/6
HAWAIIAN FISHING CANOE # 4/6
About a year ago, I innovated a new variety of Hawaiian canoe models
built using time-honored techniques and construction materials,
but with a twist; the centerpiece, however, with a striking modern
evolution: a sail transformed into a canvas, with the collaboration
of Nimrod Ubay, a friend and self-taught artist from Guam.
Entirely hand-painted on a white veneer, the sail on this model is framed
by geometrical patterns and Hibiscus flowers, with a "Honu" at its center. The turtle's back seems to evoke the contours of a Marquesan face mask.
The design of his sail is unique to this canoe, making it a truly one-of-a-kind piece.
The model, long by 12 inches, rests on a 13" by 6" wooden base and is
sold with a beautiful showcase as illustrated, measuring 13" x 6" and 11 inches in height.
