The traditional Tuamotu canoe, known as a Pahi, is an ancient double-hulled sailing vessel uniquely adapted for voyaging and fishing in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia.

Key Characteristics of the Tuamotu Pahi

Because of the rarity of trees and consequently wood, all the smaller or larger double-hulled canoes were built from stitched, short wooden planks. Some canoes reached 40 t0 50 feet in length with a beam of 11 feet..

A particularity of the smaller Tuamotu fishing canoes was that the “ama” or float of the vessel was placed on the right side (starboard) , contrary to the custom generally followed in Polynesia.

The Tuamotu archipelago has a rich maritime history, historically renowned for two main canoe types: the pahi (a large, double-hulled sailing vessel) and the va'a (outrigger canoe). These plank-built vessels were lashed together with coconut fiber and used for deep-sea voyaging, fishing, and atoll-to-atoll travel.
