HAWAIIAN OUTRIGGER WITH HAND-PAINTED SAIL

USD 5,800.00

This model has just been completed. The construction of this canoe, using very curly Koa wood, known for its cultural significance, follows traditional Hawaiian architectural principles, in particular overlapping bow and stern tops, as well as gunwales, ensuring authentic shape and soul. The model is 24 inches long.

To complement the beautiful grain of the Koa, I have introduced a contemporary edge with a fully custom-designed sail in collaboration with Nimrod Ubay, a self-taught artist from the Island of Guam, specializing in Marquesan and Hawaiian designs. Tall by 18 inches, this sail bridges the gap between the Hawaiian ancestral past and a vibrant, modern aesthetic, thus transforming the canoe into a moving piece of Pacific art.
